The Family of Rosa Anna Abbott and John Joseph LaValle

Postcard and Sources

Description: Glass blowing was an important industry in early Pittsburgh history. There were many glass facilities on the South Side of Pittsburgh, with a number in the South Hills, also. The glass blowers formed their own teams and often employed young boys to assist them.

In Allegheny County Memoirs, 1904, Christian Abbott's son, August ABBOTT, mentions that Christopher/Christian ABICHT/ABBOTT was a glass blower at one time. It is possible he worked on one of the teams during the winter off-season from farming. Or, possibly, he worked in a glass plant to earn money to buy his first farm at the age of 27.
